Cleaning a mechanical keyboard without damage

The safe way to clean a mechanical keyboard is to remove the keycaps, clean the exposed plate and switches dry first, use isopropyl alcohol only on the keycaps and the case, and never pour or spray liquid into the switch bodies — because the switches are the one part you cannot easily dry out, and they are the part that fails when moisture gets inside.

That single rule covers most of what people get wrong. A mechanical keyboard is a keyboard where each key sits on its own discrete switch — a physical, spring-loaded component with a stem, a housing, and metal contacts — rather than on a single rubber dome sheet underneath all the keys. That difference is the whole reason the cleaning advice is different from what you would do with a cheap membrane board. On a membrane keyboard, a spill usually kills the whole board at once and there is nothing to save. On a mechanical board, one drowned switch can be replaced, but only if you catch it and only if you did not corrode the PCB underneath it. Everything below is written around that distinction.

Start With Dry Tools

Before any liquid touches the keyboard, get the loose debris out. Turn the board upside down and shake it, then use a soft brush — a clean paintbrush or an anti-static brush — to sweep crumbs and dust off the plate and out from between the switch housings. Compressed air works, but hold the can upright and keep short bursts, because the propellant in a tilted can comes out as a cold liquid spray that can leave residue on the plate. A vacuum with a brush attachment on low suction is the safer option if you have one, since it removes dust instead of relocating it.

This dry pass is not cosmetic. Dust and skin flakes are what turn into the sticky grey paste that eventually gums up a switch stem and makes a key feel scratchy. If you clean nothing else, cleaning this does the most good, and it costs you ten minutes and no risk.

Pull the Keycaps

Use a wire keycap puller, not the plastic ring style that comes free in the box with some boards. The plastic ring type grips the cap by its sides and can scratch the cap and, on tight stems, pull the stem out of the switch housing along with the cap. A wire puller hooks under the cap and pulls straight up. Pull straight up, not at an angle — angled pulls are how people bend or snap stabiliser wires on the long keys.

Take the keycaps off in a container or with a towel underneath. Springs and small parts go missing on carpet, and keys that are off the board are keys you can lose. If you are not confident about the spacebar and its stabilisers, leave the spacebar on and clean around it. Losing a stabiliser wire or its little plastic inserts turns a twenty-minute job into an evening of hunting for a part you may not be able to buy separately.

Once the caps are off, you can see the actual condition of the board. This is also the moment to judge whether the keyboard is even worth the effort. If the plate is rusted or the PCB under the switches shows corrosion, cleaning will not fix it — that is a desoldering and repair job, or a replacement.

Wash the Caps, Not the Board

Keycaps are the only part that should ever get wet. Warm water with a drop of dish soap, a soft toothbrush, and a few minutes of gentle scrubbing removes the oils that make caps look shiny and greasy. Rinse them, then let them dry completely — caps with a stem cavity hold water in the underside, so give them several hours, ideally overnight, upside down on a towel. Putting a damp cap back on a switch is one of the most common ways people introduce moisture into a board that was working fine.

For stains and the shiny build-up on ABS plastic caps, isopropyl alcohol on a cloth works, but keep it off the printed legends of cheap caps — alcohol can lift some pad-printed lettering. PBT caps tolerate it better than ABS. If you are not sure what your caps are made of, test on the underside of one cap first.

Never put keycaps in a dishwasher, and never soak them in hot water. Heat warps plastic, and a warped cap will not sit flat or will bind on the switch stem.

The Case and the Plate

Wipe the case and the exposed metal plate with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol — dampened, not wet, and never sprayed directly at the board. Spraying sends atomised liquid into switch openings and into the gaps around the case. A cloth you wring out so it is barely moist is the whole technique.

For the switches themselves, brush them dry. Do not drip alcohol into a switch to "clean" it. Some enthusiasts do flush switches with alcohol during a full rebuild, but that means desoldering every switch and letting them dry for days, which is a different project from cleaning a keyboard. On an assembled board, liquid that goes into a switch sits on the contacts and the spring, and the failure shows up later as a key that chatters, double-types, or stops registering. If a switch does get wet, stop using the board, unplug it, and let it dry for a few days before testing — continuing to type on a wet switch is what causes the corrosion that makes the damage permanent.

Sticky residue on a switch stem is usually best left alone, or treated by replacing the switch if the board is hot-swappable. Hot-swap sockets let you pull a switch with a switch puller and drop in a new one without a soldering iron, which is by far the easiest repair path on a mechanical board. On a soldered board, the same repair means desoldering, and that is a real skill with a real chance of lifting a pad.

Reassembly and Prevention

Put the caps back only when they are fully dry, and press each one down until it seats. Then test every key before you decide the job is done — a cleaning session that leaves one key unresponsive is worse than the dust you started with. If a key does not register, reseat the cap first; the problem is often a cap that is not fully on the stem rather than a dead switch.

The habits that keep a board clean are boring and effective. Eat away from the keyboard. Keep drinks on a different surface, not just a different corner of the same desk. A dust cover costs little and stops the layer of dust that turns into paste. Clean the plate dry every few months and wash the caps once or twice a year, and you will rarely need to do anything more aggressive.

One thing worth separating out, since the two get confused constantly: a mechanical keyboard has nothing to do with a mechanical watch. A mechanical watch is a timepiece powered by a wound mainspring and a gear train rather than a battery and quartz oscillator, and its maintenance is a different discipline entirely — you wind it by turning the crown gently until you feel resistance and then stopping, never forcing past that point, because over-winding strains the mainspring. Cleaning a watch means a service by a watchmaker, not a cloth and some alcohol. Do not carry the keyboard advice across.

The short version: dry first, caps off and washed separately, alcohol only on a cloth and only on case and caps, nothing liquid into the switches, and full drying before power. Follow that order and the board comes back clean without coming back broken.
