"How do you wind a mechanical watch without overdoing it?"
Turn the crown clockwise until you feel resistance, then stop. That resistance is the mainspring telling you it is nearly fully coiled. On a hand-wound watch you wind it fully once a day, ideally at the same time each day. On an automatic, you rarely need to wind by hand at all — the rotor does it while you wear it, and if the watch has stopped, a handful of turns is enough to get it running before you set the time.
The damage people fear is real: overwinding a hand-wound watch can snap the mainspring or, on some movements, bend the arbor it winds around. What makes it survivable is that most watches give you a physical signal before that happens. The crown gets stiff. You feel it stop. If you keep forcing past that point with your thumb and forefinger, you are the problem, not the watch.
How a mechanical watch works
A mechanical watch stores energy in a coiled ribbon of steel called the mainspring, housed in a barrel. When you wind the crown, you are turning a shaft that tightens that coil. The spring then releases its energy slowly through a train of gears, and the escapement — a wheel with angled teeth and a small pivoting lever — meters that release in even ticks. The balance wheel swings back and forth and, through the lever, lets one tooth of the escape wheel pass on each swing. That is the tick you hear.
The whole thing is regulated by how fast the balance oscillates. Nothing in the chain is powered by a battery, and nothing is reset by software. That is the appeal and also the limitation: a mechanical watch is a machine with a finite power reserve, typically somewhere in the range of a day or two depending on the movement, and it will stop if you do not keep feeding it.
A mechanical keyboard is an unrelated product that shares only the word "mechanical." Where a watch uses a spring and escapement, a mechanical keyboard uses an individual physical switch under each keycap — a spring-loaded stem that completes a circuit when pressed. There is no shared engineering between the two, and no reason a person interested in one should care about the other, though the same buyer often is.
Winding a hand-wound watch
Unscrew the crown if it is a screw-down type, then turn it clockwise with light finger pressure. You are not trying to win a fight. Wind in short, gentle pushes rather than one long crank, and listen: a healthy mainspring gives a faint ratcheting feel as it coils. As the spring tightens, the crown becomes harder to turn. When it will not turn further without real force, you are done.
Do this once a day. Winding a watch that is already fully wound does nothing useful and stresses the winding train, so the daily rhythm matters more than the number of turns. Wind in the morning when you put the watch on, or in the evening when you take it off — pick one and stay with it, because the point is that the watch never runs down far enough to lose time.
What goes wrong: people wind until the crown feels "loose," which usually means they have already skipped past the stop and are grinding the spring against the barrel wall. Others treat the crown like a bottle cap and use their whole hand. The fix is to use fingertips only, and to stop the moment the crown stops moving freely.
Automatic watches
An automatic watch winds itself from the motion of your wrist through a weighted rotor that spins as you move. If you wear it daily and are reasonably active, it stays wound on its own and you never touch the crown except to set the time. If you take it off for a weekend, it may run down and stop.
When that happens, you do not need to fully wind it by hand. Give the crown a small number of turns — enough to get the balance moving and the second hand sweeping — then set the time and put it on. The rotor takes over from there. Fully winding an automatic by hand every day is unnecessary, and on some movements it puts wear on the winding gears that the rotor would otherwise absorb.
The honest trade-off: an automatic is more convenient day to day and less convenient when you rotate watches. A hand-wound watch is simpler, thinner, and gives you a daily ritual, but it demands the ritual. If you will not remember to wind it, buy the automatic.
Cleaning and care
Wipe the case with a soft dry cloth. A toothbrush with soft bristles and a little mild soap in lukewarm water is fine for a metal bracelet, but keep water away from the crown unless the watch is rated for it, and never submerge a watch with a leather strap. Leather degrades in water and the strap is usually worth more than the cleaning is.
Do not open the caseback. The inside of a mechanical watch is a dust-sensitive assembly of tiny pivots and jewels, and a single hair or grit particle can stop the balance. Servicing — full disassembly, cleaning, and fresh lubrication — is a job for a watchmaker, and it is needed every few years of running, not because the watch is dirty on the outside but because the oils inside thicken and migrate.
The same logic applies to a mechanical keyboard, which is the other half of what people search for under this heading. Keycaps pop off with a puller, and the plate and switches underneath collect dust and crumbs. Compressed air or a soft brush handles the plate. Isopropyl alcohol on a cloth handles keycaps, but not on the legends if they are painted rather than double-shot. Do not pour liquid into the switch housing — the contacts are exposed and liquid will corrode them.
Choosing what to wind
For a watch, the questions that actually decide it are: hand-wound or automatic, what power reserve you need given how often you wear it, and whether you will service it. A watch you will not service is a watch you will eventually throw away.
For a keyboard, the equivalent questions are switch type, layout, and whether you want hot-swappable sockets so you can change switches without soldering. The two purchases have nothing in common except the word, and buyers who conflate them end up with the wrong advice.
- Wind clockwise only; counter-clockwise on most movements does nothing or unscrews the crown.
- Stop at the first real resistance — that is the mainspring, not a suggestion.
- Wind once a day at a consistent time; do not top up a full watch.
- Use fingertips, never a full-hand grip.

The limits of all this
Not every watch behaves the same way. Some hand-wound movements have a slipping clutch that lets the crown spin past full wind without damage, which is why you will meet people who insist you cannot overwind a watch at all. They are describing the watches they own. Others have no such clutch, and on those the stop is a hard stop. If you do not know which you have, treat every watch as if it has the hard stop — the cost of being wrong in that direction is a slightly under-wound watch, and the cost of being wrong in the other direction is a repair.
If the crown feels gritty, if it turns without any tightening, or if the watch loses time in large jumps rather than a steady drift, stop winding it and take it in. Those are symptoms of a broken or slipping mainspring, and continuing to wind makes the eventual repair more expensive.
